“Oh Freedom! Blacks on the Battlefront and in the Aftermath of the Revolutionary War in New Jersey”

  • William Trent House 15 Market Street Trenton NJ 08611 (map)

Black New Jerseyans joined the ranks of both Loyalists and Patriots, depending on which side seemed to offer the best chance for freedom and were present in all key battles in New Jersey. After the War, some left the new nation to gain their freedom, some continued their lives as freed men and some were freed as a reward for their service, while others lived out the rest of their lives enslaved.

"Oh Freedom! Blacks on the Battlefront and in the Aftermath of the Revolutionary War in New Jersey” is a six-panel exhibit developed by the Office of Historic Sites in NJ Department of Environmental Protection. The exhibit will be on display before and after the July 6th talk in the 1719 historic house  during Museum open hours Wednesday from July 6th through August 24, 2025.
