History Happened Here

Jake Hirsch / Governor’s Office

History Happened Here is an engaging and flexible program that empowers students in grades 5 to 12 to choose their own topics from 250 years of local history, allowing them to connect with their communities in meaningful ways. As they explore primary source documents, analyze data, and create their projects, students develop important historical thinking skills and social studies practices aligned with the New Jersey Student Learning Standards, fostering a deeper understanding of their community's past while encouraging critical thinking and collaboration among peers.

Teachers guide their students through the research process, providing support, encouragement, and expert advice to help them shape their ideas and refine their projects. They play a crucial role in fostering critical thinking skills by facilitating discussions and encouraging students to ask questions. Teachers are encouraged to adapt program materials to suit their curricular needs, ensuring that the content aligns with educational standards and learning objectives. This flexibility allows for a more personalized approach, making the learning experience more relevant and engaging for each student.
