Lafayette's Return Visit 1824-25

Historic New Bridge Landing and the Bergen County Historical Society celebrates General Lafayette’s Return Visit on Sunday, August 24th 1 pm- 4:30 pm. 1201 Main Street, River Edge, NJ 07661.

Join Ridley and Anne Enslow at 1:30 pm in the state historic 1752 Steuben House for a story and song presentation featuring Lafayette. The program will explore the life of the Marquis de Lafayette, from his early years in the French court to his heroic role in the American Revolution. The show alternates between captivating historical narrative and live musical performances on the violin and hammered dulcimer, featuring songs from both from the American and French Revolutions, as well as compositions created specifically for Lafayette’s triumphant return to the United States in 1824-25.

On display in the Steuben House will be new exhibits featuring Lafayette artifacts including an elegant chair with blue velvet upholstery that Lafayette sat in on July 12, 1825 in Hackensack.

Check out the Campbell- Christie House where refreshments with a French theme will be available for purchase.

Visit the society’s authentic Jersey Dutch out-kitchen where interpreters will be preparing chicken with rice, a lobster bisque, gingerbread, and madeira.

Activities for families include paddle fan decorating and fishing for history facts with a prize.

Ticket reservations are encouraged: $12 adults, $7 students, BCHS member free.

Free parking available on site or take the train to the “New Bridge Landing” station on the Pascack Valley Line.

Dogs are permitted on site on a leash but not in the houses.
