Israel Shreve, Colonel of the 2nd New Jersey, recounted the aftermath of the Battle of Monmouth in a letter to his wife. “I viewed the field of battle where many British grenadiers and light infantry lay weltering in their gore.”
On Saturday, October 17th, The Friends of Monmouth Battlefield and Monmouth Battlefield State Park staff will host their third annual Candlelight Battlefield tour. This event will offer visitors a unique perspective of the battlefield while guiding you through some of the areas that witnessed some of the most violent and bloodiest moments of the battle. Walk on the same ground where the Continental and British armies clashed while listening to grisly first-person accounts from those that experienced it firsthand. Learn about the battle’s horrific aftermath and the burial of those that fell on that scorching June day.
The tour will follow the popular Hedgerow tour that takes visitors along the Hedgerow to the Parsonage Farm. Illuminated lanterns will be posted intermittently along the path to help add to the ambiance. In addition to the lanterns, a memorial candle illumination will be displayed. This event will be navigating unpaved terrain with minimal lighting and unfortunately is not ADA accessible. A flashlight (cell phone or external) is recommended for participants. The tour will begin at the Park Visitor Center at 5:45 PM. If the weather looks questionable, call the park office for information at 732-462-9616.
